Understanding the Elements in Your Chart (and How to Use Them)

Every placement in your chart belongs to one of four elements: fire, earth, air, or water. Knowing which elements dominate yours tells you more about your natural business energy in five minutes than most personality quizzes tell you in an hour. This isn't about your sign alone. It's about the pattern across your whole chart.

When I was a little girl, I loved to play with playing cards. I'd shuffle them, try to perform tricks, and even make the occasional card house. This is how my father taught me about the four elements.

He knew I loved cards, so sometimes he'd use them as a teaching tool. (Clever.) He was full of all sorts of information, and of course I thought he was the smartest man alive. Hearts and diamonds, he told me, were the feeling suits, warm and connected. Spades and clubs were the doing suits, sharper and more action-oriented.

Years later, when I finally sat down with astrology properly, the four elements clicked into place almost instantly, because he'd already taught me the shape of it with a deck of cards at the kitchen table.

The Four Elements, Business Translation

  • Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): bold, fast-moving, energized by action and visibility

  • Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practical, steady, energized by tangible results and structure

  • Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): idea-driven, conversational, energized by connection and exchange

  • Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): intuitive, deep, energized by meaning and emotional resonance

Why Your Dominant Element Matters More Than Your Sun Sign Alone

Your Sun sign gets all the attention, but your chart usually has several placements clustered in one or two elements, and that cluster tells you more about your actual working style than the Sun alone ever could. A fire-heavy chart with an earth Sun still needs room to move fast sometimes, even if the Sun wants steady structure.

How to Find Your Dominant Element

Pull up your chart, list the sign for each of your major placements (Sun, Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus, Mars), and count which element shows up most. That's your dominant energy, whether or not it matches your Sun sign's reputation.

Chart Elements, Answered

What if my elements are evenly spread with no clear dominant?

That's real too, and it usually means you can flex across working styles more easily than someone with one heavily dominant element. Notice which one you default to under stress instead.

Can my dominant element change over time?

The placements themselves don't move. Which one you lead with day to day can shift depending on what season of business you're in.

Is one element 'better' for entrepreneurship than the others?

No. Every element runs a business, just differently. Fire launches fast, earth builds sturdy, air connects wide, water goes deep. All four show up in my client roster.

My dad never once mentioned astrology while teaching me about hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs at that kitchen table. He didn't need to. Turns out he'd already handed me the whole framework, one card trick at a time.
